Systemic Approaches to Support
A Systemic Approach to support – Be curious..
An Introduction to the resources
You will find 2 sheets to use in each theme.
A curiosity discussion prompt sheet and a strategy support sheet.
These documents have been developed by some of our Trauma Informed Leads to try to support the staff to respond effectively to presentation changes in our children and Young People in the education setting.
All individuals live their lives interacting within various different social and environmental systems all of the time. These can include, school, home, family, friends, health, social media etc.
An individual cannot be separated from the impact of these systems and so when presentation changes, we need to be curious about what is happening – consider potential change in one of the systems (past or present) in which the individual is part of.
The curiosity discussion prompt sheet
The questions in the document are grouped into different categories simply to aid your discussions and thoughts and have been developed to prompt a professional discussion with the team around the child/Young Person.
The questions are intended to be thought provoking and give avenues to explore further, which may support you and your team in understanding the potential causes of any presentation changes within school. It is NOT intended to be a tick sheet for audit purposes.
The Strategy Support Sheet
The Strategy lists are, again, simply to aid your discussions and thoughts and suggestions for you to try with your team. It is not an exhaustive list, and every strategy may not be beneficial for every child or every setting – use your professional judgment to consider the next steps. It is NOT intended to be a tick sheet for audit purposes.
The possible strategies have been split into 2 sections – ones that could be potentially carried out by a class teacher and others that may require additional support from SLT or pastoral teams. There will be differences within primary, secondary and specialist settings – so please again, use your professional judgement as to what would be possible for you and your team.
As always, please be conscious of GDPR when completing these prompt forms. They can hold a lot of very personal information about individuals and should not be shared without the appropriate permissions.
*Any discussions that may lead to Safe Guarding concerns must be shared with the Designated Safe Guarding Lead in your setting.
